Sizing a heat pump for Perkins County is not a step a contractor can afford to approximate. Homes in Perkins County, SD run heat about nine months a year, from September through May. A unit that is short on capacity does not fail on a single cold night; the compressor works harder than it should across a long stretch of sub-freezing weather, and the refrigerant circuit accumulates wear that a warmer or shorter season would spread out or delay. The installer also has to settle the back-up heat question before commissioning, because heat pump capacity drops as outdoor temperatures fall, and Perkins County winters pull hard on that lower end of the range.

Ductwork sized and routed for an older forced-air system does not automatically serve a heat pump well. Return-air capacity, trunk dimensions, and the path the air has to travel were all set to a different standard. Half the homes in Perkins County, South Dakota were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a heat pump here checks whether the existing duct system can move the volume a heat pump needs before the unit itself comes up for discussion. If it cannot, resizing or extending runs becomes part of the job. The electrical service gets the same look, since older panels were not built to the load a modern heat pump draws.

What Gets Installed With a New Heat Pump

The outdoor unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil, which are the core of the system. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility space, basement, or closet and moves conditioned air through the home. These two cabinets are the primary equipment a contractor places.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor unit and the air handler, carrying the working fluid that links the two sides of the system. A thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the home's temperature and signals the system to run. The contractor also installs the condensate drain line that carries moisture away from the air handler.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.
